Every year guests travel from far and wide to enjoy the unique experience of learning skills from our International quilters. This year, we are especially excited to welcome the Fibre Artists from Spain. 

The Spanish Fibre Arts tradition is vibrant and exciting!

MONDAY, MAY 18

BARCELONA’S “ART NOUVEAU” STAINED GLASS IN FABRIC


Instructor: ROSARIO CASANOVAS

9AM—3PM

 Learn different techniques to make stained glass quilts, by hand or machine.
You’ll be able to decide how to make the “lead” (bias tape) and also if you want to sew the sample by hand or machine.

HANKIE SILK BOWL


Instructor:  DESEDAMAS – MERCÈ GONZÁLEZ

 9AM—12 NOON OR at 1PM—4PM

Starting with a special and delicate silk hankie, we will transform it into a beautiful bowl. Each silk hankie is made from the stretching of a single silk cocoon, after leaving it to soak. We will demonstrate different applications, and you will have the base to experiment and apply them to your won textile works.

TUESDAY, MAY 19

DYEING NATURAL FABRICS FOR TEXTILE ART


Instructor: Cecilia Gonzalez

9AM—12 NOON OR at 1PM—4PM

Working with hand-dyed fabrics makes works more personal, because you create our own color palette.  You will dye your own cotton, silk and linen fabrics, or other natural fabrics such as rayon, wool, ramie, bamboo, etc., to use later in your creations.

BASKETMAKING, “PANDEIRA” BASKET


Instructor: IDOIA CUESTA

9AM—3PM

Weave a basket with a vegetable fiber known as "sea grass", on a framework of two bamboo wooden rings with rattan stiles. The structure of the rings is fixed with a braid of rattan marrow with a leather band, known as the "eye of God" knot.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 20

LARGE SCALE LACE FOR CONTEMPORARY LIVING #1


Instructor: MARIÑA REGUEIRO

9AM—3PM

Traditional and contemporary TUL GROUND will be made to a large-scale using T-shit yarn, to teach the basic movements of lace to beginners. The invisible stitching called Point de Racroc will be taught to join two pieces of Tul together.  The samplers made can be used for home decoration and for fashion.

IMPROVISATIONS WITH SMOOTH CURVES

Learn how to cut freehand smooth curves and sew them together by machine with no pinning or marking! There will be a fun exercise that can become a small contemporary wall hanging, or be incorporated into a bag.

TRANSPARENCY 1


Instructor: DESEDAMAS – CECÍLIA GONZÁLEZ

The use of the transparencies in textile works brings aesthetic and artistic qualities that cannot be achieved with other types of fabrics. Silk adds is own properties: natural fabric, shiny, can be dyed easily at home to get their own color palettes. 

These techniques can be applied to a fabric base to make quilts or bags, or without a base to emphasize the play of transparencies, such as pojagi quilts, clothing, accessories, curtains and lamps.

BASKETMAKING, COVERED BOTTLE


Instructor: IDOIA CUESTA
9AM—12 NOON

Cover a bottle with basket weaving techniques, using a vegetable fiber known as "sea grass", on rattan piles. Student can customize the bottle by applying different weaving points and material combinations, mixing cord and rattan.

LARGE SCALE LACE FOR CONTEMPORARY LIVING #2

Traditional and Contemporary Lace Grounds like TORCHON GROUND / KAT STITCH GROUND / CANE GROUND / SPIDER AND BRAID / ZECCATELLO/ CRAZY TUL / CHAOTIC GROUND will be made using T-shirt yarns, on a large scale. This use of lace grounds can be an inspiration for home decoration, installations and fashion. The invisible stitching called Point de Racroc will be taught to join two pieces of Tul together.

FRIDAY, MAY 22

FALLING IN LOVE WITH SILK


Instructor: DESEDAMAS – CECÍLIA GONZÁLEZ

9AM—3PM

The natural characteristic of SILK has something magic! In this orkshop, we will teach the different qualities of silk, its characteristics, and why and how each one could be used. Understanding the differences will help you obtain the effects you desire. We will experiment with various processes and interlining, and will recommend threads and tools to work with.  Since 1995, Cecilia and Mercè González “desedamas" have specialized in painting and dyeing silk for their patchwork and textile art.
